Six months later, a hat!

This week I finally finished knitting my first anything - a hat.  I was not particularly interested in learning the skill, but in April, a neighbour in Detroit invited me to join her knitting group right after I moved to the area.  Hanging out with some awesome women, over a glass of wine and neighbourhood news once a week?!   Count me in!

Technically, I finished one hat in June or July, but there were a lot of errors, and my attempts to correct them ended in total destruction.  Then there were many, many attempts to start over, all of which ended in failure.  But now I have succeeded!  Just in time for my trip to freezing Bolivia.

Surrealism in Toronto

As I set out on my bike yesterday morning for the Ward Island ferry, the deep, cool fog had begun to lift.  The sun peaking out from behind it promised a beautiful day.  By the time I made it to the ferry, downtown Toronto was bright and colourful.  But across the harbour, there was nothing but mist.  And so began my introduction to the surreal otherworld of the Toronto Islands.

Canadianisms

During a long bike ride Thursday along the lovely Humber river on the west side of Toronto, it occurred to me that I don't speak much during the day.  I am on my own unless I'm at an exercise class or getting talked to by cranky older women in coffee shops.  (That's happened three times now.)  I can think and relax ... and observe the quirks of Canadian culture that even seven years with Mike hasn't taught me.  Here are my top four from the last week.

Nothing like fly fishing on the H in the city limits.

13.5 miles to the Beaches and back

Today, I took the TTC out to see the east side of Toronto, and spent the rest of the day working my way back on foot.   It was a beautiful fall day, and I got to go to the beach!  There were even a couple of cafe stops and a stroll through an observatory to boot.  All in all, MapMyRun says I walked 13.5 miles. And I'm still standing (sorta).

Ooo.
See, I was there too.

High Park in Toronto

I spent this morning biking around High Park on the west side of Toronto.  It's the largest park in Toronto (I think) and pretty nice.  I see more time there in my future.

This is my life now

Hmm.  Can you guess which country I'm in?
It's finally beginning to sink in:  I quit my job.
